Hyperfire is an arcade game released for the Acorn Atom by Program Power. The year of release isn't clear - online information varies from 1980 to 1982. A clue to the early nature of this game in the home micro universe is the inlay - paper with a title produced on a type-writer.
The game superficially resembles a mash-up of Defender and Scramble. Your craft traverses the screen from left to right, destroying aliens in the sky and alien dumps on the ground. Gameplay is quite simplistic and the challenge comes from the sheer amount of firepower the alien craft throw at you. The fuel dumps don't really seem to serve any purpose, as they are low scoring and being down low on the screen can be risky for your craft with less space to manoeuvre. You can move forward and back as well as up and down, which improves gameplay. Sound is noisy and graphics are colourful and reasonably smoothly scrolling. An ok game for the time, it just feels a little lacking today.
The emulator used is Pantheon. Date of play was the 9th March 2024 and the score achieved was 4,200 points. There are no user adjustable skill levels.
