Speedway is a time-trial driving game for the Thomson TO7 and MO5 series of computers and their later upgrades. It was released by Free Game Blot in 1986 and the author was Reiner Ost.

In Speedway, you have to travel a normal road course as quickly as possible while avoiding other cars and not going too fast on the bends. The game is more of a road rally type simulation than a pure arcade game (like Outrun). There are a few stops along the course that you can use to fill up on fuel or replace your tyres.

The game is not particularly absorbing today. Other cars on the road are not very common, so you are mostly keeping an eye out for approaching bends - you get almost no warning of the turns and very little time to slow down to a safe cornering speed. Go too fast round a bend and you crash and it is game over - only one life in this game! The road is varied, with up and down sections as well as left and right. It is a pity the map at top left is not more accurate and showing your current position more precisely as knowing where the bends are is key to making it around safely. I guess you were expected to learn the course from memory.

The game is not badly done. I've seen plenty of driving games on 8-bit platforms that are worse, but it is just not very interesting to play today. Maybe more cars to avoid and less emphasis on long distance travel would have been better - I'm thinking something more like the Pitstop series of games which are a lot more engaging.

This run was made on the 29th March 2026. The game has no skill levels and was played on a Thomson TO8, using the DCMOTO emulator. The final score was 123 points.

Time Stamps:
00:30 Game start.
01:38 Tyre squeal as I am travelling too fast for the bend. Too much of this and off you go into the countryside!
03:42 First hill.
06:27 Out of fuel. Game Over! Final score 123 points. You'll have to be quick or pause the video to see the result before the next game starts.
