Chuckford is a Chuckie Egg clone for the Oric 48K. It was written by Raymond Krug and released by FGC in 1986. Raymond was 14 years old when he wrote the program, which makes the program quite an impressive achievement.

Chuckie Egg is an 8-bit classic, being released by A&F in 1983 and becoming a very well-known game on the BBC Micro in particular. The original was written on the ZX Spectrum, with A&F doing ports for the BBC and Dragon 32 at the same time. Chuckford follows Chuckie Eggs premise closely. Chuckford has to collect all the eggs in the (rather oddly laid out) henhouse. Unfortunately, the chickens are not keen on this and though they do not chase him, if they touch him, they will peck him to death. If you collect all the eggs, you move to the next level. There are also pink piles of seed you can collect for bonus points, but if the chickens get there first, they will disappear. Like the original, you can fall as far as you like, as long as you don't go off the bottom of the screen.

This is an interesting game. By 1986, Oric was basically gone from the UK market and new games were rare. This release was therefore a bit of an outlier and welcome for Oric fans. It is not a perfect copy of Chuckie Egg - the graphics are simple, lack a lot of animation and the movement is quite blocky. The chickens do not pause at the seed when they reach it either, they just wipe it out. Regardless of these criticisms, the gameplay of the original is captured well and the game is fast. Look past its graphical simpleness and there is a lot of fun (frustration!) to be had with this one. It's all the more remarkable when you relaise it was written by a 14-year-old and that commercial interest in Oric games had evaporated by the time of its release. A recommended play for anyone exploring the Oric library.

This game was played using an Oric Atmos 48K emulated in Oricutron. The date of play was the 12th April 2026, there are no skill levels and the final score was 6,895 points.
