Starfighter is an arcade game by N Westley & C Westley for the Acorn Archimedes family of computers. It is a 1991 game released on the February 1991 coverdisc of Archimedes World magazine (previously known as A&B Computing).

Starfighter is a classic shoot-em-up of the type that appeared on many 8-bit computers of the 1980s. This game reminded me very much of the Galaforce games on the BBC Micro by Keving Edwards. Starfighter has a plot - it is apparently about the year 29,000 and the planet Arch is being invaded. Your small fleet of Starfighters must defeat waves of enemies, each with their own graphical design and attack pattern.

As an 80s style shooter, this game captures the essence of the genre and the time. Endless waves, plenty of colourful alien designs, smooth graphics, very noisy and quite a dose of bullet hell at times. It certainly isn't a slow or easy game. The Archimedes is obviously capable of much more, but this was a nice little game to play and feels like it brings the DNA of games for the BBC Micro with it to the Archimedes. If you want to play it, you can find it online in various archives - just look for the February 1991 issue of Archimedes World. Be aware of the controls as these are a bit odd, using the mouse buttons of the Archimedes (it had three) for left, right and fire. I recommend you remap these to something more practical for an emulated machine.

This run was made on the 24th May 2026 using the Arculator emulator on PC as an A3010. There are no skill levels, and the final score was 1,790 points.
