Fireball II is an Arkanoid-clone from Cambridge International Software for the Acorn Archimedes. It was written by Simon B Heather and released in 1990.

This game follows the Arkanoid recipe very closely. In a similar way to Breakout, you need to use your paddle to bounce a ball against the bricks that make up the playfield. Clear all the bricks and it is on to the next level - miss a ball and you lose a life - simple!

Each screen has a different arrangement of bricks and graphical backgrounds - it's a very colourful game. As well as scoring points, some bricks drop blocks with a letter on - collect these for a different effect, though not all are good. The effects are:

C - Catch - makes your bat sticky and holds onto the ball until you decide to release it.
D - Double - Doubles the balls on screen.
E - Extra wide bat.
F - Fireball - blasts through bricks without bouncing off them.
J - Jump to the next level.
L - Laser.
M - Mirror bat. You gain a second bat that moves opposite to your main one.
N - Normal - removes effects from the bat - useful if you have picked up a negative feature like Reverse Controls.
P - Protection mode? Two lights on the bat start to flash, but I am not sure what this does - some sort of shield?
R - Reverse your controls.
S - Slide - creates multiply sliding bats that follow the movement of your own.
X - Xponential. Creates lots of balls.

There are other effects in the game too. There are indestructible bricks and also some invisible indestructible bricks. The ones to watch out for are the ones that create deadly green balls. Touching these will cost you a life. They look similar to the normal yellow balls, so are very difficult for a colourblind player like me to notice.

To sum up this a fairly good Arkanoid clone and I enjoyed playing it. The graphics are smooth and colourful and a short, action-inspiring tune plays during the game. The bat responds well to keyboard controls, though I found the mouse option a little difficult. Good fun overall, this one.

This run was made on the 19th June 2026 using the Arculator emulator on PC as an A3010. There are no level selections and the final score was 5,519 points.
