Apple Galaxian is a 1980 game written by Tony Suzuki and released by Star Craft for the Apple II. It was also later distributed by Broderbund as Alien Rain. It's a Galaxian-clone, with all the usual features, but with only a small fleet of Galaxians to face each wave. One quirk in this game is that when you release the joystick, your ship heads back to the centre of the screen. This is all related to the original hardware of the Apple II joystick which used analogue instead of digital inputs and had a self-centering feature out of the box, although this could be deactivated. It takes a few goes to get used to it in this game, but it quickly became natural.
Considering the age of the game (42 years old at the time of writing) and the limitations of the Apple II, it did still deliver some fun gameplay. The aliens are quite deadly in a firing dive, so I ditched the tactic of waiting for them to come down (for double points) and just went for total annihilation as fast as possible.
The game was updated slightly at a later date to give a more full wave of Galaxians and was rereleased as Alien Typhoon, as a follow on to Alien Rain.
This run was made on the 13th January 2022 using the AppleWin emulator on PC. There are no in-game options and the score reached was 14,220 points. At the end of the video, the emulator configuration menu is displayed to show it is running as a standard machine (1MHz processor speed) as a 60Hz (US) machine.
Time stamps:
00:30 Apple 2 reboot and game loads.
00:37 Game start.
00:57 First life lost. I seemed to have a pattern of losing a life on the first screen everytime I played.
01:47 Extra life received for reaching 3,000 points.
02:24 Second life lost.
02:53 Extra life received for reaching 6,000 points.
04:17 Extra life received for reaching 9,000 points.
04:25 Third life lost.
04:49 Fourth life lost.
05:50 Fifth life lost.
06:07 Extra life received for reaching 12,000 points.
06:43 Sixth life lost.
06:55 Seventh life lost. Game Over. Final score 14,220 points.
07:05 Emulator configuration screen. Check default CPU speed and display frequency (default is 60Hz).
