Yeah. I even believe you can buy more decent joysticks having two separate fire buttons assigned. But when playing on real hardware, I'd like to stick to the original joysticks as well.

Oh yea that's annoying. If I got an ST I'd have to get some type of modded controller to assign up to a face button or trigger.

It's ok. Not on par with the PC Engine version though.
Plus, you need, as usual with 8/16bit computers, push UP to throttle.... So after some games , your tumb hurts. Incredible that they didn't assign one of the one fire buttons for it and the gear change on UP ....
