Fantasy Zone for the Sega Master System is a port of Sega's 1986 arcade game of the same name. It was released the same year.
The Master System version is a good port of the original. Naturally, there are some compromises on the graphics - lack of backgrounds during the boss-fights being a prime example. However, the game play is successfully brought over and the graphics capture the trippy design of the arcade very well. The unusual cartoon-like graphics make this game stand out from your typical horizontal shooter. I particularly like the way your ship puts out little feet to walk on when it reaches the ground.
Gameplay is similar to Defender, but has progressed significantly, with bases to bomb and multiple ship and weapon upgrades to buy at the shop. Each level has a boss to defeat once you have destroyed all the bases. These are quite tough, but if you can select the right weapon from the shop - and have it available when you need it - some can be brought down quite easily.
The game received very positive reviews at the time and still does today, despite its age.
This run was made using Kega Fusion 3.64 on PC running at 60 fps. The date was the 10th July 2022. I was using my original Master System controller, hooked up to my PC using a 9 pin to USB convertor available from Monster Joysticks ( https://monsterjoysticks.com/9-pin-joystick-to-usb-adapter ). This is not an advert (my wife purchased mine for me as a present), but it is such a cool piece of retro-kit that workds really well, I wanted to give it a plug.
