TGP
Monaco GP for the SG-1000 is an overhead view single-player racer. Released in 1983, it was a conversion of the 1979 arcade game of the same name. You have to race along a road avoiding cars and obstacles and get as far as you can along the route. Gameplay is similar to the much better known Burnin' rubber / Bump 'n' Jump.
There are three skill levels you can choose from and these determine how many opponent cars can be onscreen at once - 1, 2 or 3. Selection of the skill level is done by waiting for the skill level you want to be displayed, then pressing fire.
Your car can move left or right and has some freedom to move up and down the screen. The higher up the screen you are, the faster you are going and the more points you score. Both the speed and lack of visible space above you increase the risks however. Your car can also briefly jump which is helpful in avoiding some hazards and necessary for others. An extra life is awarded for every 10,000 points.
There are quite a selection of hazards to negotiate. As well as the other cars, the roads narrow and twist left and right (and later on they split in two). Other hazards include:
- An ambulance that approaches from the rear. You hear its siren before it arrives, so be ready!
- An icy road that both slows you down and makes steering a little chaotic.
- Dark tunnels, where the only thing you can see on the road is an area lit by a small triangle of light coming from the front of the car.
- Very narrow bridge sections over water, restricting your left and right mobility significantly.
- Bridges that are missing. The only way to clear this hazard is to jump it.
- Barriers across sections of road which can be jumped.
Some of the hazards are signalled in advance by a beeping sound and an icon at the top of the screen that lets you know which hazard you are about to face. Some are just sprung on you however, so be alert!
I found this to be a good game for SG-1000 system. The variety of hazards keeps you busy and the three skill levels offer a broad range of challenge. Control of the car is pretty good. Despite the games age, this is a recommended play.
This run was made on the 28th September 2023, using Kega Fusion v3.64. Skill level 3 was selected and the final score was 8,414 points.
