Choplifter was originally written by Dan Gorlin for the Apple II. It proved such a hit, that it managed to have versions produced for many systems, including an arcade game, which was very rare for a home computer game. The VIC-20 version was written by Tom Griner and released by Creative Software in 1982 as an 8K cartridge.

The aim of the VIC version is to rescue 64 hostages from several prisons in enemy territory. Your score is based on how many of the 64 hostages you manage to rescue, so every single one counts!

The hostages need to be released from buildings, which you can do yourself, but they can also be damaged by enemy vehicles. Once the hostages start streaming out, you need to collect them before they are hit by enemy fire. You can carry a maximum of 16 hostages, so you also need to return to your base regularly to drop them off. Only once they are safely returned to home territory do they count towards your score.

Your enemy opponents are tanks, fighter jets and killer satellites.

This is a reasonable enough port of the game for the VIC. Gameplay is good, though the graphics are a little flickery. The main issue affecting long-term play is that there is only the one level with 64 hostages to rescue and no score. Once all hostages are rescued or dead, the game is over.

This run was made on the 24th February 2024 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. There are no skill levels and the final score reached was 55 rescued hostages.

02:18 Second return to base.
03:20 Third return to base.
04:41 Fourth return to base.
06:14 Fifth return to base. Game Over! Final score 55 hostages rescued.
