Cosmic Cosmiads is a Galaxians type game for the Commodore PET. It was written in 1981 by Derek Hipkin. After quite a bit of digging, I was able to find that a release is confirmed as it is listed as MP106 for sale at £10 in the PET Pack and General Disk Library and is reviewed in Commodore Club News May 1981. The PET Packs were official Commodore UK software products and tapes were sent out in boxes with inlays carrying a large Commodore logo on the front. Running £10 through an inflation calculator, reports that is about £48 in 2024, so I guess this was considered a "Triple A" title at the time! Derek also wrote Cosmic Jailbreak on the PET (which is MP100 in the library).

The game is fundamentally Galaxians. A fleet of aliens hovers overhead and occasionally one drops down and attacks, firing as it goes. They can loop back around at times as well, so keep a close eye on them. You have three lives to destroy the fleet. If you do manage to destroy the fleet, another takes its place. This time, up to two aliens can drop down and attack you and they can fire shots at angles too. Your fuel supply constantly ticks down, acting as a timer. Between each wave, a large Zylon comes onto the playfield. This can only be shot in the opening underneath, which takes quite some doing. Succeed, and you can progress to the next screen.

The game is very fast paced and getting very far is going to take a lot of practice. I did manage to get to the second screen though. Use of the the PETSCII graphics is pretty good, as is the sound and this is another of the better arcade games for the PET. Within the graphical limitations of being forced to use the PETSCII character set, a fair job was done. Unlike many games of this era, this one has genuine replay value. There are 10 skill levels, from 0 to 9, so adjusting these to match your ability allows for increased longevity.

This run was made on the 13th December 2024 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. Skill level 5 was used as this appeared to be the default on loading. The score reached was 730 points.
