Ascend is a platform game, in the vein of Donkey Kong. This version is for the Oric 48K and was released in August 2022. The program was written by Inufuto as part of a multiplatform project that uses a common format for producing the games and a machine specific interpreter/library for making the main program run on that specific machine.
The aim of this game is to climb the platforms using the ladders and get to the top. There are ghosts that move left and right along some of the platforms and these are deadly to the touch. They won't follow you or use the stairs though, so they can be avoided. Scattered about each level are blocks. If you get below these and jump, you can push them up into the level above and this will block the path of the ghosts. Red fireballs also descend from the top of the screen and head ever downwards using the ladders - these are fatal too. Occasionally an exclamation mark appears and collecting this awards bonuses. Reach the top platform and you move to the next stage with a different layout.
This is a fun platform-puzzler to try. Like most games in the Inufuto project, it is based around a simple concept and gameplay, in order to make the game readily portable between all the 8 bit machines imaginable. I did find the character a little tricky to control at times - mainly when trying to stop exactly next to a ladder. You'll need to practice this, especially as the game progresses and gets harder. Sound is ok and the graphics simple, but nice enough.
The blocks add a nice touch to the game strategy - make sure the ghost is on the side of the block that you want before jumping! You can make your life harder - or impossible - if you are not careful about which blocks you push up and when you do it. I believe there are a total of ten different screens, then they start again at a higher speed. Overall, another nostalgic game from Inufuto, that will take you back to 1983, when simple games were still popular and fun and the age of more complex games was just about to dawn.
This run was made on the 14th June 2025 using the Oricutron emulator on PC. There are no adjustable skill levels and the final score was 4,110.
