Bomber Baron is a 'Blitz / City Bomber' inspired arcade game from Optyx Software. It was written by someone using the handle 'The Mighty Bad' and released in 1986.
The game is a version of the simple City Bomber game, which appeared quite early in the home computer era. The earliest version I have tracked down is Air Attack on the PET, released in 1979 and written by Peter Calver. The game appeared in Personal Computer World magazine as a type-in listing and was also released on cassette by Supersoft. Many copies appeared on many machines afterwards, perhaps the best known being Blitz for the VIC-20. Anyway, I digress!
All you have to do is press a key to drop your bomb on the buildings below. You need to clear all the buildings to land and your aircraft is descending continuously, so this is a game of timing and accuracy. Simple, but addictive.
This game was released in 1986, which is quite odd as people will have played many versions by then, including several they probably typed in themselves from books and magazines. I can't imagine it would have been very popular. Still, as this type of game goes, it is fairly good, if bringing nothing new to the table. There is a nice screen wobbling effect when you crash.
This game was played at the Retro Collective, Stroud, UK on the 4th October 2025, on their BBC Micro - there is an Acorn Atom sat on top of the monitor. There are no selectable skill levels in the game. The final score was 459 points.
