Another conversion of an ancient handheld game to the Commodore PET by Nick Sherman. This time it is the Nintendo classic Donkey Kong Junior in the Game and Watch series, released by Arlasoft in 2019. It requires a minimum of 16K RAM.
The Commodore PET does not allow redefined character graphics, so you have to make games using the built in character set. This does at least include a number of graphic-like symbols. This gives you the famous PETSCII set to build your games with.
In this game, Junior has to free his dad who has been caged by Mario. Kong Sr is trapped in the cage at top-left, with Mario just below him (use your imagination!). Junior has to run or swing his way along the jungle pathway to reach the swinging key. If he can do this four times, Donkey Kong will be released. Dangers along the way include the snappers, which move along the ground, and the birds which fly through the air. Contact with any of these will cost you one of your 3 lives. Jumping and missing the key will also cost a life. The fruit on the middle of the upper level can be freed by jumping at it. It will then fall to the ground, giving you bonus points for any snapper or bird it hits along the way.
This game was amusing to see and fun to play. I remember the Game and Watch series (though I never had one, lots of kids did have at least one) and seeing this PETSCII version brought a smile to my face. You'll need a little bit of dexterity and a careful eye to get far in this one, but it is worth several goes to see what you can do. I still can't believe people make games for this old machine, with it's tricky to master fixed graphics set. It is lovely to see programmers doing this. If you want to try the game for yourself (and you should) you can find it on the Arlasoft itch.io page here:
