Alphatron is an arcade game for the BBC Micro. It was released by Tynesoft in 1986 and written by Jason Sobell and Kevin Blake.

This is chase-and-shoot arcade game, where your scout ship must shoot down missiles before they reach a refinery several screens away. If you shoot a missile down, another will follow shortly. If the missile reaches the refinery, it damages the shields, and when all shields are gone it will be destroyed.

The missiles are fast, although they do not vary in their path. The main issue with the game is that your scout ship carries such a tiny amount of fuel, that if you fly as far as the refinery, you are unlikely to have enough fuel to make it back. Landing on your launchpad to refuel is also frustrating as you have to be pixel perfect. The game does at least play a decent version of 'Fanfare for the Common Man' at the start of each game.

This game is difficult and fast-paced, but not really that engaging or interesting. A test of your willpower, more than your arcade skills.

This run was made on the 20th February 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. There are no level selections and the score reached was 1,800 points.

Time stamps:
00:30 End of previous game. Apologies for the missile stuck on screen, this is an artifact from the previous game and will not disappear even when you start a new game.
00:33 Game start.
00:57 First missile shot down, just before it reaches the refinery. But will I make it back to refuel?
01:06 Successful landing back at base and refuelling.
03:06 First life lost.
05:04 Second life lost.
06:59 Third life lost. Game Over! Final score 1,800 points.
