Rocket Raid is a Scramble-clone for the BBC Micro from Acornsoft. It was released in 1982 and was written by Jonathan Griffiths. Jonathan also wrote the classic Pac-man game for the Beeb, called Snapper, as well as the unusual JCB Digger.
The game follows the Scramble game closely. Your rocket craft flies over the enemy Martian landscape, attempting to create as much destruction as possible without being hit by a missile or colliding with the terrain. Your fuel runs down constantly, so you can refresh it by bombing the fuel dumps (not sure how this refills your fuel tank, but there you go!).
If you survive long enough, you enter a long cave where the Phizzers bounce up and down - collision with one of these is fatal. Survive the cave and it is back out over the open landscape, but now a swarm of indestructible meteors flies overhead, forcing you to hop from valley to valley. Clear the valleys and you enter the city, where space can be tight. Losing lives is quite likely here (it's almost impossible!), but at the end of the maze is the enemy base - destroy this for a successful raid, then you get to do it all over again.
This version of Scramble is beautifully coded. It is colourful, sounds good, the graphics relate to the original arcade game and the controls react quickly and smoothly. Unfortunately, I find the difficulty in this game just a touch too high, with the game being very fast. In fact the controls are so quick to move that collisions with the terrain are not unheard of. So, a great game, but also a little frustrating too.
This run was made on the 20th February 2026. The emulator is Pantheon, running on PC. There are no adjustable skill levels and the final score was 10,260 points.
