Aerial is a Scramble-inspired arcade game for the Oric and released in 2022. The program was written by Inufuto as part of a multiplatform project that uses a common format for producing the games and a machine specific interpreter/library for making the main program run on that specific machine (called Cate). This allows one core program to be relatively quickly adapted and ported to a range of machines. It's an incredible project, as is the number of machines supported. If you had an 8-bit micro in the 1980s, this game is almost certainly available for it.

The game is not really a Scramble clone, but that will give you an idea of the game mechanics. Flying over an enemy landscape, you have to destroy the opposing aircraft missiles and launcher vehicles. At the end of each stage, one or more airships will appear, and these have to be destroyed to progress to the next wave. Each airship requires 20 hits to destroy it. The first stage is quite easy, but it soon gets harder as more enemies appear and aircraft start to appear from behind you. On Stage 3 for example, there are two airships, not one.

This was another of the Inufuto games that I enjoyed playing. If you are familiar with the game engine, you know that the scrolling will not be smooth on the Oric (like most of the 8-bit home micros) but the gameplay is designed with that in mind. The game reminded me of similar Oric games such as Chopper by Severn Software and the first stage of ATM (Air-Terre-Mer) by Cobrasoft.

This run was made on the 28th February 2026 using the Oricutron emulator on PC. The final score was 56,800.
