Dune Rider is a Moon Patrol style game for the BBC Micro. It was written by Ashley Saulsbury and released by Micro Power in 1984.
In this game, the backstory is that you are a mission to deliver vital plans for the planets defence. The aliens attacking the planet will try to stop you in this task. They appear as circling enemies overhead, dropping bombs down on you. some of them drop fuel cannisters and these are vital to collect to keep your fuel supply topped up. As you progress the types of alien change, bringing new characteristics and attack patterns with them. There are also hazards on the ground to tackle such as lava pits that must be jumped and rocks that need to be shot.
The game starts with a little animation of your character running to his buggy to begin the mission. The graphics are perfectly adequate, but the unvarying terrain design ultimately leads to a pretty drab scene once you've played it several times. It lacks the background design of the original Moon Patrol and the aliens are small, although I feel that actually adds challenge to the gameplay, so it is not a bad thing. I do like the way the suspension of your four sets of wheels tracks the terrain underneath, a nice little graphical touch. Sound is also ok. The pits on the ground can be very difficult to spot, especially when you have your eyes busy trying to blast the aliens above you - that might have been made a little more obvious. The game looks like it might be quite ordinary, and I guess it is, but it keeps you so busy trying to stay alive, blast the aliens and not collide with the lava pits, that it is actually more engaging than it appears. Your buggy responds well to the controls - so it's your fault when things go wrong!
This run was made on the 19th June 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. The game has no selectable skill levels and the score reached was 1,830 points.
