Skramble is an early clone of the arcade game Scramble for the Oric-1. It was written by Rita Jay (real name Keith Wood) and released by Microdeal in 1983. It is notable as running on the 16K machine as well as the 48K Oric. The game was originally released on the TRS-80 in the United States and ported to the Dragon 32 in the UK. The Oric version bears similarities to these versions but was written separately.
Probably the first thing you will notice about this game are the chunky graphics. These are done using a relatively low resolution for the Oric and I am guessing this was partly because it was quick to do to get a game out as soon as possible. The colour scheme is also quite garish and betrays the games inspiration from the TRS-80 / Dragon version. Despite the chunkiness the game actually moves and scrolls quite well - not that common an effect on early Oric games. This leads to the game being quite playable, although the large graphics do not give you much space to manoeuvre and you can collide with your explosions, so beware!
Most of the usual Scramble characters are here - missiles and fuel tanks on level 1, the cavern and UFOs on level two and indestructible fireballs on level 3. I'm not sure what is after that, as this is as far as I have got.
There is plenty of sound too, and the higher up the screen you are the higher pitched your bombs when you drop them. A small touch but it shows a level of care from the programmer as they did not have to do this.
This isn't that bad for an early Oric game - certainly better than many other games for the Oric in 1983. Yes, it's chunky, low-res and has graphics glitches all over the place, but it plays ok and that is the main thing for a game of this era.
This run was made on the 28th June 2026. The game was played on an Oric 1 48K using the Oricutron emulator. There are no adjustable skill levels and the final score was 6,100 points.
