Nemesis is a Centipede clone for the BBC Micro. Released by Micro Power in 1983 and written by Tim Chown, who also wrote the Targ-like game Apple Pie for the Beeb.
Although this game is basically another Centipede, this one has a little bit of a twist. Instead of Centipedes and other creatures in a garden, the plot revolves around you trying to stop an invading alien fleet of Vogons. The centipede in this game is replaced by a space convoy which you must destroy. The mushrooms are replaced by asteroids and the spider takes the form of a large, spider-like Vogon known as a Crusher. Fleas are replaced by Chargers, which don't fall straight down, but aim slightly towards you. The Scorpion is now a Crawler, but it basically does the same job. It's all a slightly different and gentle reimagining of the original game.
Gameplay is far from gentle however. Despite the large, colourful and smooth moving graphics, the gameplay quickly becomes hectic. Shooting the mushroom / asteroids results in them dropping debris in your direction, so that is a new hazard compared to the original. So, yes, it's Centipede, but it is a nice touch to change up the scenario behind the gameplay slightly. As a Centipede variant, it is pleasant to play.
This run was made on the 21st July 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. The game has no selectable skill levels and the score reached was 3,850 points.
