Road Runner is a Rally-X inspired game for the BBC Micro. It was released by Superior Software in 1983 and written by Richard Hanson.

You control a car in a maze, with an aim to collect all of the flags located within it. There is a time limit (your fuel supply) and the maze is littered with rocks which will destroy your car in a collision. The largest threat are the opposing cars which also race around the maze. Contact with them is deadly, but they can be temporarily delayed with a quick blast of smoke. One flag is marked with an 'S' and this gives extra points for any flags you collect after it. Collect all ten flags and it is on to the next level. A radar at the top of the screen helps you identify where the remaining flags and enemy cars are.

This game makes no pretence of being a Rally-X copy. The maze design is different, being one long horizontal strip that wraps around itself. I imagine this was done due to hardware or memory limitations. As a 1983 game, programming techniques to overcome some of these limitations would not have been developed yet, or where they were, would not be widely known. The small graphics are actually ideal for this game, allowing you to see a significant area of the map on-screen at all times. They are colourful and detailed and while movement isn't perfectly smooth, it is smooth enough for the time. The sounds are suitable, if limited, with no in-game tune. Navigation at junctions can be a bit fiddly, and it is not uncommon to get stuck briefly at turns which can be a real problem when the enemy cars are in hot pursuit, but otherwise playability is good.

I have fond memories of playing this on the school BBC Micro (we had one, alongside a Commodore PET). There was a lunchtime and after-school computer club where we mostly played games like this. Games by Acornsoft and Superior Software were almost constantly played due to their high quality for the time.

This run was made on the 22nd July 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. Skill 1 was selected (easiest), though this is not seen in the video. The final score reached was 40,300 points.
