Tempest is the official port of the arcade game to the BBC Micro by Superior Software. Released in 1985, it was written by Matthew Atkinson, who wrote several other games for the BBC including many of the later Repton series.
This version of Tempest plays exactly like the arcade game. For those who don't know the game, you control a craft usually known as 'The Claw' which patrols the edge of a vector portal. Things crawl out of this portal to attack the player. Destroy each wave and you zoom into the portal to go to the next level - unless there is a spike in your way.
You are armed with a blaster and a once-per-level super zapper that functions like a smart bomb. The previously mentioned spikes are a pain, left behind by Spikers. Colliding with these on your way to the next level costs a life, just as you think you have successfully cleared a level.
The arcade game was characterised by insane shooting action and cool vector graphics and this port does a good job of emulating this as much as it can. It's not super smooth, but it is playable. I was never a fan of Tempest, but this version seems faithful enough to me.
This run was made on the 22nd July 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. Start Level 1 was selected. The final score reached was 6,760 points. Unfortunately, due to an error on my part, the sound in OBS was switched off, so this run is silent.
