Blitzkrieg is a 3D first-person tank shooter for the BBC Micro. It was written by Simon Vout and released by Software Invasion in 1984.

The game is undoubtedly inspired by Battlezone. Gone are the wire-frame graphics and instead, full graphic models for the enemy tanks are used. These tanks appear on three distance levels and can move left or right, but never alter their distance. If they see you, they will rotate towards you and attack. You can only move left, right and fire the main gun. There is no ability to move forward or backwards as you can in Battlezone. The gameplay is therefore relatively simple, and in fact reminded me of the electromechanical games that existed in the 1960s and 1970s. It is more of a shooting gallery type game, than a true Battlezone imitator.

It looks good, with nice 3D effects, especially the explosions, but the lack of true playfield movement ultimately takes some of the long-term fun out of the game. The desire to keep increasing up the promotion scale does add an element of one more go though. You have ten lives, which gives you an idea about how it can be impossible to avoid enemy shots at times. Like many Software Invasion games, the technical achievement of the game tends to overshadow the gameplay somewhat.

This run was made on the 30th July 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. There are no skill levels. The final score reached was 57,800 points. Due to an error on my part with OBS Studio, the sound for this run was not recorded.
