Bubble Bobble is a port to the BBC of the 1986 Taito arcade game of the same name. The BBC version was to be released by Firebird, but never did get released, as by the time it was ready (late 1988 to early 1989), the BBC market was in decline. Firebird felt the costs of releasing it would not cover production and licensing costs and so the game was shelved. The game was written by Peter Gillett, with graphics and design input from Tim D'Aubney and Martin Kelsey. Fortunately, it survived in Peter's collection, and he released it to the public in 1989, giving the game the release it deserved.

Bubble Bobble was written specifically with two player simultaneously play in mind. The game features two dragons, Bub and Bob, whose girlfriends have been kidnapped. So, off they go on a quest over 100 levels to rescue them. Each level consists of a number of platforms, and often holes in the floor that teleport you up to the top of the screen. A number of enemies appear on each screen and have to be destroyed to progress to the next. Doing so takes two steps. In the first step, you have to blow bubbles to catch the enemies, then you pop them to destroy them and turn them into fruit you can collect for points. If you do not burst the bubble quickly enough, the enemy escapes. Take too long on a screen and a deadly ghost like character appears that pursues you and cannot be defeated, only avoided. A number of bonuses and power-ups can appear at any time as well.

Bubble Bobble is a famous classic, remembered for its innovative two player gameplay, cute graphics and famous soundtrack - one of the all-time classic gaming tunes. It is still a lot of fun to play today, as much as it was on initial release forty years ago. The BBC version cannot hope to match the arcade version, but does an excellent job at getting close, featuring 100 levels, very similar graphics and the all-important tune is present too. Gameplay is a tiny bit slower than the original, but not too bad and it certainly did not spoil my enjoyment of the game. Such a shame Firebird did not release this at the time as I am sure it would have made its money back and taken its place as a BBC classic. Fortunately, thanks to Peter, it has survived to still be playable today and take its place among the best games on the BBC, although I have yet to see how it performs in two player mode.
