Super Invaders is an arcade game for the BBC Micro from Acornsoft. It was written by the legendary Geoff Crammond (Revs, The Sentinel, Stunt Car Racer) and released in 1982, making it one of the earliest games for the BBC Micro.

Ostensibly a straightforward Space Invaders clones, it is definitely one of the better ones for the BBC and an insight into Geoff's ability to make smooth, polished games which get the best out of the machine. Graphically there is not much you can extract from Invaders clones, but the visuals here are animated, colourful and smooth. I like the way your tanks tracks are animated for example. Small touches like this really help a game stand out from other versions. Sound potential is also limited in a game like this, but the UFO (referred to in the game as a Reconnaissance Ship) makes the famous "woo-woo-woo" sound straight from the arcade cabinet.

As well as the standard Invaders game, called "A Mild Encounter", two further variants of increased difficulty are available. In "An Uncomfortable Situation" if a UFO successfully traverses the screen, blue bars are added to the side which makes the Invaders path shorter before they drop down a level. In the final variation "A Terrifying Experience" the enemy shots track you after falling a certain distance. This one really will keep you focussed on the gameplay! I am not the greatest fan of Space Invaders, nor am I very good at it (I prefer games like Galaxian), but even putting that to one side I did find this one of the more difficult versions to play. The Invaders are very hard to pick off when there are just a few left at low level. Still, it didn't feel unfair, just more difficult than some of its rivals.

Although there are dozens of Invaders clones on the BBC, if you want to try just a few, this is definitely one that should be on your list. Not only is it a well written version, the two additional modes add some more longevity and variety, and from the historical perspective it is interesting to see this very early release from Geoff Crammond.
