Jetpac for the Oric is a port of the legendary platform shooter for the ZX Spectrum. The Oric version, by Rax of Team RaxIss was released in completed form in November 2026 as v1.01.

In Jetpac, you have to build your spaceship from parts and then fuel it to escape from the planet and its inhabitants. In the Oric version, you only build a ship once (the Spectrum version has four) and then refuel it on each planet. The planet has platforms on which to stand and you have the titular jet pack to get around with. You are also armed with a laser to destroy the enemies. As well as collecting fuel packs, there are also random treasures that drop which can be collected for bonus points. Once your ship is fully fuelled, the fuel stops dropping and that is your cue to make your escape.

As well as only having the one ship design, there are a few other differences in the Oric version. You, your enemies, and the laser fire do not wrap around the screen edges like on the Spectrum. This makes the gameplay slightly different with regards to how you battle your opponents. I like this difference; it reminds me of how the ports back in the 80s always seemed to be different from each other in some way because of the technical variations between each machine and the knowledge and taste of the different programmers. In a world where we have become used to similar ports across all machines, this is a nice throwback to an earlier time. This version also features a random platforms option which is very interesting as it adds a new take that the Spectrum did not have. There is also a different keyboard control option available if you prefer it, and a trainer option which gives you a lot of lives to play with.

This is a fun port of an old classic. The graphics are almost as good as the Spectrum original, though they lack the vibrant colour. You can partly blame the need to avoid colour clash and partly blame the Oric having an unusual attribute system for its graphics for that. The Oric has much better sound capabilities than the original Spectrum models, but here the programmer has chosen to replicate the Spectrum sounds - which I think is a fair choice in this instance. The version played here is v1.01 which is the first version suitable for wider play and with major bugs squished. Earlier versions often feature freezes on most emulators and hardware after the first level.

This game was played using the Oricutron emulator on the 8th November 2026. Original mode and original lives (five) were selected. The final score was 8,400 points.
