Thanks Oni.

I was surprised how good the Atari VCS version was. Yes it misses a lot of stuff, but still fun.

Carnival is a 1980 arcade game from Gremlin / Sega. The port to the 2600 is genrally very good and was programmed by Steve Kitchen, brother of Dan Kitchen (with many well known games to his credit from Atari VCS classics to modern mobile phone games). It was released by Coleco in 1982.

There are some significant omissions from the arcade original. Most notably, the bonus round where you shoot the bear are missing. This is a shame and I am sure it will be lack of memory space that would have been the reason for this. Oddly, the game cover includes the bonus stage bear as it's main image. Again this makes me think that it was intended to be there, but cut due to cartridge memory constraints. The B O N U S letters are also missing as is the in-game music. Despite these omissions, I still think this is one of the better arcade ports to the VCS. Visually, I could be mistaken for thinking it was a different platform entirely. I can see how the missing features will shorten the games longevity though.

You only have one life. The game ends if you run out of bullets, so overall accuracy along with shooting the yellow ducks before they reach the bottom of the screen are key. You can gain more bullets from shooting the '8' symbols or hitting the random area at top left when it is showing a '+' symbol.

This run was played on PC using the Stella emulator. The date of play was the 5th March 2023. The game has no variations or difficulty settings. The final score was 31,560 points.

Trivia: I picked up the cartridge from a second-hand shop for 49p. I was a collector of 8-bit stuff long before the retro craze took off and people were practically giving old games and hardware away then.

Time stamps:
00:30 In Stella, game loaded and showing the demo mode. NTSC / 60fps displayed at top left.
00:27 Game start.
04:52 Out of bullets. Game Over! Final score 31,560 points.
