Cross Snake is a Snake-type game from Fabrizio Caruso. It is part of his Cross-Lib project, where programs can be written in one overall language and can then be easily ported to several different 8-bit platforms by the libraries in the system. As a result, Cross Snake is available on many 8-bit machines. The Sega Master System version was released in May 2021.
This Snake game is a good example of how a relatively simple game can be produced and ported to many different machines. The simplicity allows for the game to work quite easily across all the platforms using a single core program. This is such a clever concept for retrogaming and there are a few projects like this out there now. Despite the game's overall simplicity, don't be deceived - its a lot of fun to play!
The aim is for your snake to eat all the apples that appear on each level. Collision with yourself or a mine is fatal and will cost you one of your five lives. Although there is no time limit, there is an energy limit which ticks down as you move. Eating the apples will temporarily reverse this countdown - so don't take too long between apples! Colliding with walls is safe, and as you are no longer moving, this gives you a chance to pause and plan your next move. As the energy ticks down, the worm moves faster, making it harder to navigate accurately.
As well as the apples and mines there are also rings to collect. Collecting 3 rings on a screen produces an Energy pill on screen. Collecting this is very useful! There are also dollar signs to collect which give extra points. There are also secrets to discover....
Thanks to all the extra features, there is enough here to keep the game interesting despite being a well-visited and out-dated theme. I had some fun playing this game on several of the 8-bit platforms and it was interesting to see how the same core engine was handled on different formats. The game does make use of each machines graphics and sound capabilities where it can.
I'm very interested to see what can be done with this system moving forward and what can be achieved within the limitations of the Cross-LIB platform.
