Ski is a game by Mike Singleton for the Commodore PET. It was written in 1982. I don't believe it was commercially released, so I don't know how this was distributed - perhaps direct from the author or via one of the software libraries at the time.

The game principle is very simple - get your skier down the course as quickly as possible with the minimal number of crashes. You are up against the clock, which stops when you cross the finish line. Controls are straightforward - left, right and press Shift-Lock to put your legs together and go faster. The standard course is 500 metres / Downhill / Wide Run, but these characteristics can be changed in the game to create more possibilities for gameplay.

Your character is quite easy to control, but if you go off the edge of the course, you'll tumble to the ground. You can carry on, but you lose time. The tumble is done in an excellent way. The PET could only use its fixed set of characters - no user defined graphics were available - so the tumbling skier made using only the standard character set is beautifully done. The animation on the skier during his run is also worthy of note. Despite the simplicity of the game (and the machine it runs on), Mike has managed to bring his usual class to the program, including the nicely presented title screen.

I know this game is pretty simple, but it is worth a look just to see how Mike managed to bring his own level of quality to even the most feature-poor of machines and the programs that could run on them.

This run was made on the 13th December 2024 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. The default track was used: 500 metres / Downhill / Wide Run. The time achieved was 27.28 seconds.

Time stamps:
00:30 Title screen. Another very nicely done screen from Mike, considering the limitations of PET graphics.
00:37 Game begins. Immediately go into fast skiing mode to get the best time possible.
01:05 Finish line. Game Over! Final time 0:27:28 or 27.28 seconds.
