Super Glooper is a Pac-Man clone for the Commodore PET. It was released in 1981 and written by D.E. Anthony.
The game features the standard formula of a maze, four ghosts, power pills and a tunnel. Interestingly, the maze is very similar to the arcade maze, just tipped on its side, so in this version the tunnels are at top and bottom, not left and right.
Although the game has a good maze layout, gameplay is a little lacking. The graphics are quite simplistic with the ghosts just being squares. Your Pac-Man is also very simple, but does at least have a little animation. On the first screen, only one ghost leaves the pen, on the second two leave the pen and so on. There is no fruit.
The only thing that lets the game down is the controls. The keyboard response is not the most responsive and that can lead to you missing turns. As the ghosts follow you very accurately, every delay at a junction will allow them to get closer and ultimately, this will lead to the loss of a life. If the controls had been better, then the game itself would have been more fun, despite the simple graphics. Instead, I just found this version quite frustrating. Still, what more could you expect from 1981? For example, C&VG magazine reviewed this in their January 1982 issue and they really liked it.
This run was made on the 16th December 2024 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. There are no adjustable skill levels. The final score was 8,730 points.
Time stamps:
00:30 Title sequence - another nicely done screen from the author.
00:50 Game begins.
03:20 First life lost. A victim of the awkward key response, in fact all losses of life in this run are due to missing junctions.
03:45 Screen 1 cleared.
05:44 Second life lost.
06:08 Third life lost. Game Over! Final score 8,730 points.
