Acrobat II is a version of the 1977 arcade game Circus by Exidy (there was also a Midway version called Clowns). The arcade machine is similar to Atari's Breakout, but has developed the theme in several interesting ways. Acrobat II is a PET version which is a faithful conversion, which appears to have been released in 1982. The author isn't recorded.
Acrobat II takes the heart of the Breakout formula and makes it more interesting. Instead of a static wall, there are now three rows of floating balloons which move across the screen. If a row is destroyed, bonus points are awarded and a full row replaces it. If you can clear the top row, you are awarded an extra life as well.
To destroy the balloons you have a pair of acrobats who bounce up and down on a see-saw, catapulting each other up into the air. Whenever an acrobat hits a balloon it is destroyed and you score some points. You must intercept the descending acrobat with the see-saw (and the correct side of the see-saw too!) or else they will splat on the ground and be carried off in an ambulance and one of your lives is lost. The game ends when all lives are lost.
I was never that keen on this game in the arcades back in the seventies and eighties, but I seem to have developed a fondness for it in later life. I actually quite enjoy playing these Breakout style games now. As a result I did enjoy my time with this PET version. The use of the PET graphics is simple, but well done - I especially liked the flailing limbs of your acrobats and the tumbling they undergo if they hit a platform. It is not an easy game and you need to practice a lot to get your eye in, but this is the essence of simple fun from a simpler time!
This run was made on the 17th December 2024 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. There are no adjustable skill levels. The score achieved was 750 points.
