Bomber is a bomb-drop flight arcade game for the Commodore PET. I couldn't find any info about the game in original paperwork sources, but later on I just listed the program, as the game is written in BASIC. The game is credited in the code as being written by Arne Gleason in July 1979 in Canada, but I am not sure how it was released. It is possible it was passed around the user group network and libraries, rather than having a formal release.
In Bomber, you are the bombardier of a B-29 bomber, whose mission is to fly along a river, dropping bombs to destroy as many hydroelectric plants, ammunition factories and barges as you can. The mission lasts two minutes, after which the game ends and your score and rating are given.
Control of the aircraft has been passed from the pilot to you and it is your job to steer the bombsight "+" left and right and decide when to drop a bomb. The bomb falls for a short time with forward momentum, so you will have to aim just ahead of your intended target.
The bomb tumbles away briefly before reaching the ground. If you miss, the bomb leaves an 'X' shaped crater in the ground, but if you hit one of the targets, there is a satisfyingly large explosion on the ground made from PETSCII characters.
Another game that takes us back to the enthusiast scene of the late 70s, when every program was a new adventure into the beginnings of computer gaming.
This run was made on the 1st February 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. There are no adjustable skill levels. The score achieved was 1,000 points, earning the comment of "Well thats not too bad".
