Atarisoft's Asteroids Deluxe is a conversion of the Atari arcade game. This appears to be another Atarisoft game that was ready to go, but not released due to the problems in the video game market at the time. The game was ready in 1984 and written by Paul Skirrow - who may have also written Lunar Rescue on the VIC-20 by Rabbit.

It is a pity this was not released as it is a good version of the arcade game. Like the original Asteroids, your main aim is to blast rocks into pieces until they are no more. If any pieces hit you, you lose a life, so blasting and avoiding is the core of the game. The UFO's also make an appearance again, the smaller one being more dangerous than the larger one. This time it comes armed with some sort of bomb - if you shoot this it fills the screen with shrapnel and avoiding these pieces is very hard. To top it off, near the end of the level when only a few asteroids remain, the Crystal appears. Shoot this and it breaks down into a bundle of Swarmers which pursue you relentlessly.

Blast everything and you start the next level which is harder. The game is finished and great to play. I can't understand why it was never released, even despite Atari's troubles at the time and the sale to Jack Tramiel, who is widely reported to be the person behind stopping the games going on sale. Luckily the game has survived, so we can now see what BBC owners missed. It really is a shame they were not released at the time. I hope Paul got paid for this work, because it is good quality. Good graphics and sound and smooth (enough for a BBC anyway) gameplay make this a recommended play.

As a final nod to longevity, the game has a number of selectable adjustments, include Easy (Start at Wave 1) and Hard (Start at Wave 5) games, plus several options for the hyperspace function (hyperspace, shield, flip and so on).

This run was made on the 21st February 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. Skill level Hard was selected (the game starts at Wave 5) and the hyperspace shield function was set at default (shield). The final score reached was 5,080 points.
