Moon Dash is a Moon Patrol inspired arcade game for the Acorn Archimedes. It was written by Ian Richardson and released by Minerva Software in 1990. It was a double game release, sharing the package with another Ian Richardson game, Bug Hunter.
If you know the original Moon Patrol, you will have no issue knowing what to do here. Drive your buggy, which looks like a wheeled beetle, across the landscape to reach the waypoints. The plot in this game is that you are trying to reach the city at the end of 16 zones. As you drive along, various alien enemies attempt to destroy you from the sky, which you can attempt to shoot with your buggy's cannon. Unlike the original Moon Patrol, where you could only fire straight up and forward, in this version you have to aim the cannon left and right to shoot at the enemies and obstacles that are above you, in front of you and (as you progress) attacking you from behind.
The landscape is littered with hazards. Rocks block your way and must be shot to remove them safely. Larger ones require more than one shot. There are also pits that must be jumped. Your buggy is equipped with an amount of armour, so you are not destroyed when you are hit or fail to jump a pit, but the armour goes down each time. You are awarded some more armour if you reach one of the 16 waypoints. If you lose all your armour though, it is game over. The waypoints are essential for repairing your armour and a handy distance marker counts down so you know how far you have to go to the next one. After visiting a waypoint, the landscape changes, as does the nature of your attackers - usually bigger rocks, more pits and pits appearing in sequences, as well as different enemy types attacking in different ways.
This is a reasonable take on the Moon Patrol genre. It's colourful and some of the enemies are nicely animated - I like the rotating red aliens that appear right from the beginning - and it keeps your hands full with trying to both drive the buggy and operate and fire the gun. As you get further into the game, it gets very frantic with jumps to negotiate and enemies on all sides keeping you very busy. This game may not be the greatest game for the Archimedes, but if you enjoy Moon Patrol games, you won't find this one awful either.
This run was made on the 7th June 2026 using the Arculator emulator on PC as an A3010. There are no level selections and the final score was 11,680 points.
