Centipede is a Centipede clone for the BBC Micro by Superior Software. It was written by Richard Hanson and released in 1982, marking another early BBC release from Superior and Richard.
The game follows the Centipede game style reasonably closely. There is, of course, a Centipede that makes its way down the screen towards you, splitting into segments whenever you shoot it. There are also the toadstools that block your shots, and the other denizens of the garden include the spider, flea and snail which all behave like their arcade equivalents. The biggest change is the control method of your player. You can only move left and right and not up and down. This means that if the Centipede reaches the bottom row, there is no way to avoid it and a loss of life is inevitable. This changes the dynamics of the game a lot, as you really have to focus on blasting the Centipede. It is possible to slide under the Centipede when it reaches the last-but-one row and destroy all the segments, but it is difficult to pull off.
This mechanic makes the game very hard and games will inevitably be short. I imagine this movement choice was made to simplify programming and get the game out quickly, but it does mean other Centipede variants for the BBC are more pleasant to play - or at least you feel like you have a fighting chance with them. Graphically it is ok, certainly pretty good by 1982 standards and sound is also satisfactory. Not a bad game - as long as you don't mind short games!
This game was released originally as Centibug, but it is the same game. The game was renamed to Centipede when Atari decided that the Superior version could be allowed to be the 'official' port for the BBC.
