Bone Cruncher is a Repton / Boulder Dash style game for the BBC Micro. It was released in 1987 by Superior Software and was written by Martyn Howard, based on the original game by Andreas Kemnitz on the Commodore 64.

You play the role of Bono, a dragon whose job is to make soap from the bones of skeletons which you deposit and boil in a cauldron. Of course, life isn't that simple and the castle you inhabit also has a number of deadly inhabitants such as spiders and monsters. There are also trapdoors you (and the monsters) can fall into. The skeletons are scattered about and five are needed to make a bar of soap at the cauldron. Once done, take the soap upstairs and chuck it in the moat where the giant monsters are enjoying a bath. You also have a friend, not a very smart one, called Fozzy. This red creature will wander around and can defeat some of the enemies for you. On later levels you will have to trap some of the monsters in order for them to die so you can collect their skeletons.

Gameplay wise, this is a development of the Repton formula, with skeletons replacing diamonds. The other mechanics the game employs are quite different though. The large oval objects are called Glooks. These strange creatures are usually harmless, but they do move at times and if you are in the way you will be killed. They can also block your progress preventing you finishing the level and having to sacrifice a life. It's quite a puzzle and if you enjoyed Repton, I'm sure you would enjoy this new imagining of the traditional genre. The graphics are very good - colourful and detailed with nice animation. They are the best in this genre that I have seen in the BBC. The sound is ok too, with a rendition of Mozart's Rondo alla Turca playing while you explore the castle.
