Snail Trail is a 1983 maze game for the BBC Micro from RH Software. The author is not known.

A simple game (in fact it is in BASIC) that nevertheless was part of the phenomena of home computers at the time. You play the part of a snail that must solve a maze before time runs out. If you do, you get another maze to try, and they get harder as you clear each one. The early mazes are drawn quickly, showing the power and speed of BBC BASIC, though it soon takes a while to draw the more complex mazes that follow. It seems far too simple now to be enjoyable, but back in the early 80s being able to interact with a machine and screen in any form was a novelty and all sorts of game ideas were tried and enjoyed, often very simple and based on older games from 'the real world'.

Easy at first, it becomes very fiddly trying to move your snail through some of the more detailed mazes. Lining up with the pathways can be tricky and with the clock ticking down, it can get frustrating. There is still a small sense of satisfaction though when you clear one of the harder mazes. For Sega Master System owners, this might trigger fond memories of the consoles built in Snail game.

This run was made on the 22nd July 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. The game was played at Skill Level 1 (easiest) and the score reached was 46,115 points.
